Lilongwe, in the Central region, is the capital city of Malawi. There are two parts to the city:

  • Old Town which contains the market and many shops, hotels, supermarkets and restaurants There is a pleasant Sports Club with a bar, restaurant and swimming pool.
  • New Town which contains the main Government building, Diplomatic Missions, Aid Agencies and the country’s Reserve Bank headquarters. Here there are also shopping precincts, hypermarkets, hotels and restaurants.

Lilongwe International Airport is the main Immigration point for European visitors and from here internal flights link the visitor to the other main cities.

Lilongwe has most city facilities that visitors expect, such as hospitals, hotels, restaurants, fast foods, bars and discos. Vehicle agencies, car hire companies and a fast luxury coach company have offices in Lilongwe and there are good opportunities for playing or watching sport, either live or on satellite TV which many of the larger hotels and motels offer visitors.

Nearby attractions for visitors are Kasungu National Park to the North West, Nkhotakota Game Reserve to the North and Lake Malawi to the East.
